Frequently Asked Questions
What type of training does Teach East offer?
Teach East is a SCITT, which means most of your learning is “on the job”, in schools watching and learning from current teachers. Every Friday there is specific training for trainees which focuses on different approaches to teaching, supporting learners with additional needs, educational theory and key elements of the curriculum.
SCITT courses are fantastic ways to learn because you get the support of weekly personalised training but can really get stuck in at school and help children to develop right from day one.
How much does Teacher Training cost?
The fees for Teach East are £8250 for the training year. You will be placed in two contrasting schools within or very close to Peterborough and will have access to high-quality training, mentoring and support. At the end of the academic year, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status as a Newly Qualified Teacher!
In partnership with the University of Hull Teach East also offer trainees the chance to achieve a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCERT). This is an optional, additional qualification which provides you with 60 Masters credits. If you choose to take this route the fees for the course (including QTS) are £9250.
Do I need lots of school experience to apply?
Experience of working or volunteering in a school is not a requirement for the course. Some applicants would like to spend some time in a school, in order to gain an insight into what the life of a teacher entails. If you are struggling to arrange your own experience at a school, contact us and we may be able to help you.
Is there any support for funding?
In a word, yes! Many secondary subjects qualify for Government bursaries of up to £30,000 for completing your teacher training (please see https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/funding-and-salary/overview for further details.)
Also, you can apply for student loans to cover the cost of your training, meaning that you wouldn’t start paying anything back until after you had secured employment.
The starting salary for a teacher is currently £23,720 (correct as of September 2018).
Where will I train?
The home base of Teach East is at Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton, to the north of Peterborough. Arthur Mellows is the lead school in the SCITT and has twice been rated Outstanding by Ofsted. Whilst the base is at Arthur Mellows, much of the training happens within other schools, allowing trainees to experience a wide range of settings and to understand the wide breadth of schools in Peterborough.
