Teacher Training Course in Peterborough
Teach East is a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) training course provider in Peterborough, which means it is heavily focused on spending time in school and learning on the job. Many trainees find this way of learning hugely beneficial as it optimises the amount of time you are in real and relevant settings, allowing you to see the realities of teaching – both good and bad! On our training course in Peterborough we teach the teacher.
Your Training Week
You would spend Monday to Thursday in your placement school, observing experienced teachers and how they inspire young people, moving gradually to taking more and more of a role in the classroom as your confidence and knowledge increases.
Every Friday training is delivered at our dedicated training centre at Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton, Peterborough. During these sessions experienced teachers will cover a wide range of topics from behaviour management to planning and assessment, giving you the skills and knowledge needed to become a great teacher. The highly interactive sessions provide you with a variety of ideas and resources you can use the very next week in your placement school.
Every trainee is assigned a mentor to guide them through the teacher training year, offering support, guidance and advice as appropriate. One hour per week is set aside to meeting this mentor, recording key events and setting meaningful targets for the work ahead, based on identified strengths and areas for development.
The in school experience is developed and built upon through dedicated training days every Friday, led by experts in various areas of educational practice. These sessions mix theory and academic study with hands on activities, allowing you to learn techniques and ideas that can be implemented almost immediately, helping you to develop into an outstanding practitioner.
The majority of the training year is spent within one school; however there is also a second placement in a contrasting school that allows you to work in a setting different to your primary placement, again helping you to understand and gain experience of the diverse range of schools in which you could potentially work.
To complement the work done in school and in training sessions, we recommend that trainees follow the Post-Graduate Certificate in Advanced Educational Practice (PGCert) through the University of Hull. This academic course provides you with invaluable research opportunities, enabling a deeper pedagogical understanding and is worth 60 Masters credits. The majority of our trainees follow this programme and are well supported by both Teach East and University of Hull staff.
